Janis said “When you’re old and grey
and your poetry will fade away
you’ll be regretting all the pearls you’ve lost
on the banks of the river”
Then she ploughed through the freezing snow,
she said “Bobby, I gotta go”
and she rode all the way to Frisco
on a shack-like tatty wagon
Since she started her crazy run
I’ve become the fool of everyone
waiting here like a ramblin’ dog
at platform n. 1
Well, I was her lover, I was her man
I was her headlight in the nighttime
but she left me alone
Janis sang in all the two-bit bars,
someone says she’s become a star
and she got all the diamond rings she wants
on her fanciful fingers
Well, last night Jimmy stole an old TV,
we turned it on and what a surprise to me!
It was Janis singin’ “Summertime”
with her fur-lined coat on
Here the trains do their usual runs
but I don’t believe that she’s gonna come
and trade her fame for a dirty spot
at platform n°1
Well, I was her lover, but now I guess
I’ll wear this ball and chain forever
Well, it’s sad to be alone

and your poetry has faded
you will regret all the pearls you lost
on the riverbank”
Then she made her way through the icy snow
added: “Bobby, I have to go”
and traveled to San Francisco
on a battered wagon like a shack
I have become everyone’s laughingstock
always waiting for her here, like a stray dog
at platform 1
I was her love, I was her man
I was her beacon in the night
but she left me alone
some say she’s now become a star
and has all the diamond rings she wants
on her capricious fingers
Well, last night Jimmy stole an old television
we turned it on, and what a surprise for me!
There was Janis singing “Summertime”
wearing her fur coat
but I really don’t think she’ll come
to throw away her fame for a miserable little place
at platform 1
I was her love, but now I bet
I’ll carry this ball and chain forever
It’s hard to be alone!
